Issei Hyodo is a second year high school student who is unpopular with girls at Kuoh Academy due to his reputation as a pervert along with his two best friends Matsuda and Motohama. While conversing outside the old school building, Rias Gremory, the crimson-red haired top idol of the academy and president of the Occult Research Club (ORC), discovers Issei. Taking an interest in him, she asks her vice-president and best friend Akeno Himejima about his identity. Longing for a girlfriend, a girl named Yuma Amano shyly asks Issei out, to his shock and excitement. As per Rias' orders to spy on Issei, the ORC begin their preparations regarding him after popular 'mascot girl' Koneko Toujou overhears Yuma asking Issei out. At the end of their date, Yuma asks Issei to die for her sake and reveals herself as Raynare, a Fallen Angel. After Raynare kills Issei by stabbing him in the abdomen, he sees a vision of Rias after his blood reminded him of her hair color. Waking up the next morning virtually unscathed, but retaining full memories of the incident, he passes it off as a dream and resumes his normal life. Failing to convince Matsuda and Motohama about Yuma's identity, Rias passes by and shoots a glance at Issei, which confuses him. Returning home after experiencing abnormal symptoms, Issei encounters another Fallen Angel, Dohnaseek, and is badly wounded. Just as Dohnaseek is about to finish Issei off, Rias, Akeno and Koneko intervene and save him. The next morning, Issei wakes up to discover he and Rias naked together in his bedroom. Reassuring that the dreams were real, Rias introduces herself as a Devil and, after claiming that he is now hers, Issei's new master.

Rias explains to Issei that she used her magic to heal his wounds and revive him, which is also the reason as to why they were naked, as it only works if both people are fully unclothed. To his disappointment, she also reveals that she's a virgin and introduces herself to Issei's shocked parents after his mother discovers the two in an intimate position on his bed. At Kuoh Academy, the students of both genders - most notably Matsuda and Motohama - are dumbfounded to discover Rias and Issei walking to school together. During class, popular school prince, Yuuto Kiba, is ordered by Rias to lead Issei to the Occult Research Club where he meets Koneko and Akeno. The group welcomes Issei to the ORC and Rias briefs Issei on the current situation with Angels, Fallen Angels, and Devils; alongside revealing that he possesses a Sacred Gear, which is rare among Devils, as well as the duties assigned to him. Because Koneko is overbooked, Issei is assigned to substitute for one of her clients. Having to bike there after failing to make the jump via teleportation, he is forced to watch an Anime with an Otaku. Failing to form a pact with the client, he returns home, encountering another Fallen Angel named Kalawarner who attempts to kill him. Heeding Rias' advice on focusing to bring out his Sacred Gear, he successfully activates it, which transforms his hand into an armored Dragon Arm called a Boosted Gear - one of the 13 Longinuses - and defeats her. Although proud of him, Rias warns Issei that since he now has a functioning Sacred Gear, he will be sought after by the Fallen Angels. However, Rias swears that she won't let any of them harm Issei.
3 | 3 | 'I Made a Friend!' Transcription: 'Tomodachi, Dekimashita!' (Japanese: 友達、できました!) | Kosuke Kobayashi | Takao Yoshioka | January 20, 2012
While walking to the clubhouse one day, Issei meets and befriends a teenage nun named Asia Argento, who had recently moved to Japan and possesses a Sacred Gear called Twilight Healing that allows her to mend wounds. However, because of her lifestyle as a nun, he hides his Devil identity from her. After Rias warns Issei about the dangers of the Church and the major problems it would impose if he were to set foot inside, the team is sent to battle a Stray Devil - Devil servants that have rebelled and killed their masters to gain independence - named Viser, who has been enticing people to an abandoned house and cannibalizing them. Rias briefs Issei on the 'evil pieces' system, where each member of her team has a certain role similar to chess pieces. In the Gremory household, Rias is the king, Akeno is the queen, Koneko is the rook, Kiba is the knight, while Issei is the pawn. After quickly defeating Viser, Koneko is once again overbooked, so Issei is sent on another assignment. However, after discovering the client's bloodied body, he is forced to deal with a ruthless and sadistic exorcist named Freed Sellzen, who violently assaults him. However, Asia, working for Freed, witnesses the incident and attempts to stop Freed from killing Issei. As Freed is about to deliver a killing blow, Rias and the other members intervene, where she apologizes after unknowingly sending him on a dangerous mission. The ORC leave with Issei, but leave Asia behind, to his dismay.

After most of his wounds are healed, Issei goes to a park hoping to better himself by improving his physique. While there, he encounters Asia and spends time with her. During their date, Asia heals the remainder of his wounds and tells Issei about her past: Abandoned by her parents when she was baby, she spent her entire life being raised by the Church. When they discovered her healing abilities at the age of eight, she was transferred to a larger Church and exploited because of her power. After unknowingly healing a Devil, she was excommunicated by the Church, branded a heretic and forced to run away, joining the Fallen Angels shortly afterwards. Issei vows to be her friend regardless of their differing factions, but they are interrupted by Raynare, who taunts Issei over his lowly abilities. After impaling Issei in the stomach with a spear of light, Raynare convinces Asia to come with her after threatening to kill Issei, but not before mentioning a ritual at the Church taking place that night. At the clubhouse, Rias tells Issei to forget about Asia, but he refuses to just simply let her go. She then explains a special ability that pawns have: Promotion, which can promote his piece to another other piece - minus the king - but only if in enemy territory in accordance to Rias' declaration. She also explains how Sacred Gears are tied to emotions of their user; the stronger they are, the more powerful it becomes. After Rias and Akeno leave, Issei - determined to rescue Asia - heads for the Church, with Kiba and Koneko in tow. Rias and Akeno arrive outside the Church, where they meet a Fallen Angel named Mittelt, who was standing guard, bringing in Dohnaseek and Kalawarner to back her up. Meanwhile, Issei, Kiba and Koneko storm into the sanctuary and after defeating Freed, head downstairs, where they find Asia chained to a cross and Raynare extracting her Sacred Gear for her own purposes.
5 | 5 | 'I Will Defeat My Ex-girlfriend!' Transcription: 'Motokano, Taoshimasu!' (Japanese: 元カノ、倒します!) | Tetsuya Yanagisawa | Takao Yoshioka | February 3, 2012
After putting Asia's Sacred Gear into herself, Raynare releases Asia's body to Issei. Because tampering with a host's Sacred Gear proves fatal, Asia starts dying as a result. Raynare reveals that she noticed Issei's desires when they first met and the 'relationship' was merely a part of her plan to kill him due to his power, which surprised her, considering that Issei is apparently so weak that he is not a threat even with his power doubled. With Koneko and Kiba fighting off the reinforcements, Issei carries Asia back upstairs. Issei begs for her to stay alive, but Asia, after saying that she cherished the time she spent with Issei, dies in front of him. Although Raynare tries to explain to Issei that Asia would've been killed anyway as humans with Sacred Gears are seen as different from everyone else, wanting Asia back, he prays to Lucifer where the extreme intensity of his emotions upgrades his Boosted Gear into its initial form. Using a boost ability which automatically doubles his power every ten seconds, in a state of righteous manic rage, he is able to use his newfound power to knock out Raynare with a single devastating punch even after she had impaled both of his legs. Rias, after killing the three Fallen Angels out front after they insulted and underestimated Issei's potential, appears in the Church and admonishes Raynare for also underestimating Issei's potential with his Sacred Gear and for injuring one of her servants. In a last-ditch attempt to manipulate him into trusting her again, Raynare changes into her human form and pleads for Issei to protect her. Angered by Raynare's behavior and trying to twist his emotions, Issei asks Rias to kill Raynare as he can't bear himself to. Asia's Sacred Gear is then returned to her and she is revived as the Gremory household's bishop. A few days later, before a party welcoming Asia into the group, Rias tells Issei that she used up all eight of her pawn pieces to revive him after she saw the potential that his power would bring, which she claims was worth the risk. She then gives Issei a tender kiss on the forehead to strengthen his stamina so he can better fulfill her orders. Meanwhile, an unknown person disguised as a Phoenix spies on the club from outside the window.

After Raynare's demise, new living arrangements are made for Asia, who has been living in the clubhouse for the time being. Meanwhile, Issei begins a new early morning training regimen with Rias to further improve his physical condition. During training, Asia reunites with the two and heading to Issei's home, he is surprised to find boxes outside the house. Rias reveals that Asia will be living with Issei and his family for now on, after she asked Asia her living preferences; choosing Issei's home. With some convincing from Rias, they eventually get his parents' approval after conversing with them. Asia also begins attending Kuoh Academy as a second year student, where she is placed in Issei's class (thanks to Rias); quickly attracting the attention of the other classmates including jealousy from Matsuda and Motohama. The following night, Issei volunteers to go in Asia's place on another assignment. Although he completes it, he is again unable to receive a pact, being forced to watch another Anime with a cosplayer. Disappointed, Issei thinks it over during P.E. class the next day, where he ends up sleeping in the infirmary. Waking up, he finds a naked Rias there sleeping next to him. Noting Issei's sexual desires, Rias allows Issei to touch her breasts in exchange for acquiring a pact. Accompanying him that night, Rias and Issei head out to their job: Helping a Japanophilic foreign exchange student named Susan (who is wearing Samurai armor) retrieve her notebook because she is too scared to herself. Although successful, she then requests help to attract a guy she has a crush on, eventually writing a love letter at Issei's suggestion and using a bow and arrow to send it. After an unusual meet up with her love (who is in knight's armor) the following day where they confess their feelings for one another, Issei successfully completes the job. He later tries to get his reward from Rias, giving him five seconds to do so, but loses when the other members arrive - much to his dismay. Rias instead gives him a hug, shocking everyone.
7 | 7 | 'I Get a Familiar!' Transcription: 'Tsukaima, Getto Shimasu!' (Japanese: 使い魔、ゲットします!) | Takenori Mihara | Takao Yoshioka | February 17, 2012
On their way to hand out flyers, Rias instead decides that it is time for Issei and Asia to have servant familiars, which are a major part of being Devils. The school's student council, run by student body president Sona Sitri visits the clubhouse, where Issei learns that they are another faction of Devils. Since only one group is allowed to enter the world of familiars per month, the two groups compete to see who gets to go first. Rias and Sona compete in a doubles tennis match with Akeno and Tsubaki Shinra, Sona's queen. Although it starts as a normal human competition, it quickly escalates as Rias and Sona use magic to enhance their moves; eventually destroying most of the equipment as a result, leading to a draw. The council suggests they compete in a team match instead, choosing dodgeball as the sport. That night, Issei stays up making the group headbands as thanks, and so he'll remember not to strike his own team members by mistake. Rias' group eventually wins the match, dedicating it to Issei after he was struck in the groin by Sona's magic-charged ball, allowing them to pick new familiars first. During the search for familiars, they are greeted by Master Familiar Towji. He guides Issei and Asia throughout the forest and shows them the different familiars that they can choose. The group later finds a Sprite Dragon, a familiar that is not only dangerous, but difficult to obtain. Suddenly, a mysterious green slime litters the forest and starts to eat away at females' clothes. Issei wants to make the slime his familiar and uses Asia to protect it after the other members destroy the rest of it, but is knocked out by the Sprite Dragon, who has taken a liking to Asia. In the end, Asia accepts him as her familiar, who she names Rassei, while Rias notes Issei still has ways to go.

Issei dreams that he is marrying Rias, where he manages to get in touch with the spirit inside his Boosted Gear, the Welsh Dragon Ddraig. During school, Koneko notices Issei and his friends peeping through a locker while changing and beats them, causing Asia to heal Issei. After heading home, Akeno tells Rias that despite Issei not having a single pact signed, he is very popular with the clients, which causes Rias to start focusing on him more so that he doesn't lose confidence in himself following the familiars incident, although Akeno questions the assertive approach of Rias' commitment towards Issei. That night, Issei encounters Asia in the bathroom, who confesses a desire to have a deeper relationship with Issei due to her growing feelings towards him. Later, Rias appears in Issei's bedroom that night, where she asks Issei to have sex with her, although excited, he is also confused as to why. However, her attempt is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of Grayfia Lucifuge, the wife and queen of Rias' brother Sirzechs Lucifer, who initially mocks Issei as a lowborn until Rias reprimands her and indirectly mentions that he's the Red Dragon Emperor. Grayfia and Rias leave, but not before Rias quickly kisses Issei on the cheek goodbye. At Kuoh Academy, Issei and the group are introduced to Riser Phoenix, a high-ranking Devil and third in line to the Phoenix family, who is to be engaged to Rias, explaining her insistence to lose her virginity with Issei last night. Although Riser claims that Devils need to remain pure-blooded after the last war significantly dropped their numbers, and that Rias' family have already approved the engagement, she refuses to marry Riser, claiming her husband will be her choice. Grayfia explains that should the proposal break down, the two households would settle the arrangement with a Rating Game, a game that devils play that is similar to chess, hence the reason as to why they are assigned pieces. Mocking Issei's dream of having a harem by making out with his queen Yubelluna, Issei angrily confronts him, which leads to Riser having his pawn Mira strike Issei in the stomach, knocking him out. In response, Rias tells Grayfia that she agrees to the Rating Game.

Rias agrees to fight with Phoenix clan in ten days time, so the Gremory clan begins to train in an isolated area under Rias' supervision as they prepare for the Rating Game due to their clear disadvantage over Riser's 15 pieces. Issei unluckily fails every lesson: First he loses to Kiba in sword fighting, then he loses to Akeno in concentrating and manipulating magic, which Asia is a natural in and then loses to Koneko in combat training and gets beaten badly. However in the fourth lesson where Asia and Issei cook dinner, he manages to break potato and onion skins through visualization, naming the ability Dress Break, although it causes a mess in the kitchen. That night, Issei privately practices Dress Break with Asia until he successfully masters it. Rias explains to the history of the Rating Game: Angels, Fallen Angels and Devils were once at war with eachother, which ended with a stalemate. The war nearly wiped out the populations of all three sides. In the case of Devils, out of 72 households, three survived; The Gremory's, the Sitri's and the Phoenixes. This, combined with a low fertility rate for Devils because of their near-eternal lifespan are one of the main causes of their dwindling numbers, which is why they began recruiting humans and creating the Rating Game. Later, while in a Mausoleum with Rias, after sharing her personal problems as a member of a respected Devil family, Issei claims that he likes her for who she is and admires her strength as a leader. However Issei, feeling that he is not useful for her and the team, admits that he is the most useless Devil she has, even though he possesses the Boosted Gear, it's useless if he is unable to unlock its full potential and considers himself a total failure. Rias denies that he is a failure and discovers that he lacks self-confidence, so she promises to help and stand by him; comforting him when he breaks down crying. The next day, he starts training using the Boosted Gear. Managing to boost 12 times, he throws a powerful beam towards Kiba, which is so strong it destroys part of a nearby mountain and ultimately exhausts him. Upon realizing that his attack will affect the direction of the game, he starts to trust in himself and the team. While Rias, remembering what he said about how he liked her the way she is, starts becoming more attracted to him.
10 | 10 | 'The Showdown Begins!' Transcription: 'Kessen, Hajimarimasu!' (Japanese: 決戦、始まります!) | Masayuki Iimura | Takao Yoshioka | March 9, 2012
One hour before the Rating Game begins, Issei and Asia comfort eachother in his room, where she claims that she wants to stay with Issei, something he is completely okay with. Sona and Tsubaki arrive are tell Rias they're calling the shots for the game, which is being broadcast live to the Underworld. Grayfia, the game's referee, also arrives and claims that Rias' brother will be watching it. Arriving at the battlefield, after Grayfia explains the rules of the game, it begins. Because the arena is based around Kuoh Academy, the ORC formulates a battle plan, nicknamed 'Phoenix Ashes', which involves capturing the gymnasium in order to obtain a major advantage. After Rias orders Issei to lay his head on her lap - alleviating a dampening spell on Issei's powers that Rias put on him until he was ready, which explains his rigorous training preparations - he and Koneko head to the gym after she and Kiba set up a perimeter, where they encounter Mira, two other Phoenix pawns named Ile and Nel, and a rook named Shueran. After a lengthy battle where Issei fights the pawns and Koneko fights Shueran, Issei finishes off the pawns by using Dress Break on them, destroying their clothes. Koneko also manages to defeat Shueran with her brute strength. While this is happening, Kiba deals with three more pawns named Shulyer, Marion, and Byurent. With the gymnasium now under their control, Akeno destroys it quickly afterwards, eliminating the four Phoenix members inside. However, despite their victory, Yubelluna catches Issei and Koneko off guard and eliminates her with a single attack.
11 | 11 | 'The Acclaimed Battle Continues!' Transcription: 'Zessan, Kessenchū desu!' (Japanese: 絶賛、決戦中です!) | Taro Kubo | Takao Yoshioka | March 16, 2012
After eliminating Koneko, Yubelluna battles Akeno while Issei and Kiba reunite, the latter of which defeating the three pawns he was facing just prior. Rias informs them of her plan to launch a sneak attack on Riser's base with Asia and are ordered to draw the enemy's attention away from the base now that she's left with no other options due to Akeno dealing with Yubelluna. At the athletics field, the two are met by Riser's knight Karlamine, who Kiba fights, while Issei battles Riser's remaining pieces, which includes his rook Isabella, Riser's sister Ravel Phoenix, who is a bishop alongside Mihae; Ni and Li, his two remaining pawns and his knight Siris. Meanwhile, Rias and Asia arrive at Riser's base, encountering him shortly after entering. Karlamine destroys Kiba's sword, but he simply grows a new one by using his Sacred Gear Sword Birth, which grants him the ability to create magical swords, while Issei eliminates Isabella using Dress Break and blasting her using his Boosted Gear. While continuing to battle Riser's remaining forces, Rias and Asia start battling Riser on the rooftop. After getting some inspirational advice from Rias, Issei upgrades his Boosted Gear to its Boosted Gear Gift form, which has the ability to transfer it power to an ally or allies and amplify their power significantly, which eliminates the rest of Riser's team except for Ravel. However, Akeno is eliminated when Yubelluna replenishes herself using a special Phoenix family elixir known as Phoenix Tears, also eliminating Kiba shortly afterwards. Meanwhile, on the rooftop, Rias and Asia are having a difficult time fighting Riser due to the Phoenix family's special immortality ability, which is why his win/loss ratio is 8-2, losing two of them on purpose out of respect. Issei promotes himself to a queen and reunites with Rias and Asia on the roof. Yubelluna attacks Asia which causes her to collapse in shock, with Issei surviving due to his promotion to a queen. Enraged, he tries to take down Riser using his upgraded Boosted Gear, but fails due to exhaustion from overexerting himself previously and from Yubelluna's attack. Despite Issei's determination to keep fighting, Riser brutally beats him. Just as he's about to kill Issei, Rias, wanting to protect him, resigns and agrees to marry Riser.

In his dream, Ddraig reveals himself to Issei and tells him not to give up and get stronger, no matter what the cost. Waking up, two days have passed since the Rating Game. Grayfia appears and informs Issei the results of the Rating Game with Rias surrendering in order to spare Issei's life and instructing Asia to tend to his wounds, as the rest of the team is in the Underworld attending the Gremory-Phoenix engagement party. Issei blames himself for being weak and for not protecting Rias, although Grayfia reminds him that it wasn't his fault and claims that the game's outcome was not going to change. Noting his determination to save Rias, Grayfia gives Issei a magic circle passed down from Sirzechs that will allow him to travel to the engagement party and, according to Sirzechs' message, would allow him to go in and rescue Rias by force before leaving. Asia enters the room and embraces Issei, who tells her that he's going to rescue Rias, knowing that she would do the same for him. Issei crashes the party and with the help of his friends, takes down Riser's reinforcements. Sirzechs then appears and confirms that he was behind Issei's arrival, offering to host a one-on-one battle between Riser and Issei to liven things up since he found the Rating Game between the Gremory and Phoenix families unsatisfying, being underwhelmed especially by Riser's performance since the Gremory household defeated most of his forces despite his larger numbers, and an underdog like Issei nearly took Riser down himself. Sirzechs also tells Issei that he wanted to see his powers firsthand, which is why Grayfia appeared at his house. Issei wishes for Rias before he and Riser engage in fierce duel. Promoting himself to queen, he uses an Over Booster that activates an imperfect version of his Balance Breaker for a short amount of time. Although they are initially equal, Issei, who borrowed Asia's crucifix, uses it to hold back Riser, where he discovers that Issei made a deal with Ddraig in which he sacrificed his left arm in order to wield heavenly items and use the armor. Issei's time limit unfortunately runs out, but just as Riser is about to end Issei, he pours holy water onto Riser, which prevents him from regenerating, allowing Issei to get the upper hand and finish Riser by transferring the power of holy water and the crucifix into his Boosted Gear. With Riser defeated, the engagement is nullified and Sirzechs tells Grayfia that he's surprised that the Red Dragon Emperor is part of their household, while Rias, overwhelmed at the lengths that Issei went for her, kisses him on the ride back home. After the battle, Rias decides to move into the Hyodo residence, much to the shock of both him, Asia and his parents. |

Issei and Asia ask Rias to observe how the others do their jobs so they can learn how to do theirs better. The two are surprised on how simple the tasks are, from playing games, to cooking, to giving a foot massage (albeit with Akeno doing it in a sadistic way). When the gang accompanies Rias on her job to check to see if an Egyptian coffin is cursed, Issei becomes possessed by the mummy, an Egyptian Magician named Unas, who is just as perverted as Issei. Unas claims that he'll only release him if they remove the curse that binds him, the methods of removing it being perverted in nature. First, Rias dancing in a skimpy outfit; second, a kiss from Asia (albeit accidentally on the cheek after trying to kiss Koneko); and third, rubbing his face on Akeno's breasts and hair. After fulfilling his request, it turns out that he tricked them to free himself as the curse was placed on him by a female Devil from the Agares Clan who he tried to make his bride. While initially having the upper hand by binding the girls with his bandages, Issei is able to use Dress Break to free them, and Unas is destroyed by a combination of Akeno's thunder and Rias' Power of Destruction. |
